Last Wednesday and Friday, Marcus participated in the soccer tryouts for the upcoming season.
It was from 6pm to 8pm, and it was so cold and windy, especially on Wednesday. I couldn't believe it. For whatever reason, a soccer field is always windy and 20 degrees cooler than anywhere else! You think we'd be used to it by now, but it still amazes me at how chilly it can be.

The tryouts went pretty well, and he made it to one of the three teams they have for the U10 players. There are Red, White, and Blue team, and the Red team is the premier team.
I saw a few kids who looked really good and experienced, but most of them looked about the same level to me. Of course I'm not a soccer expert at all, so probably the coaches/judges at the tryout could tell the difference.
Marcus was chosen to be in the Blue team and he was discouraged that he didn't make it to an upper level team, but I think the team he made it into would be a good one because he will have the same coach as the last season. This coach knows Marcus very well and we think he'll help Marcus continue to develop his skills. I'm actually okay with him not being in the Red team because I don't think I want an extra commitment that is going to be expected for an upper level team. They are required to make soccer a priority throughout the year and out-of-state tournament travel is expected.
However, I was a little puzzled to see some of his previous teammates make it to the White team, and I didn't think they were better than Marcus. I shouldn't be too worried about it, especially I suspect that the coach wanted Marcus to be in his team and had already chosen him even before the tryout. He came over to Marcus on both days and told him that he was doing a good job and would make it to one of the teams.
But you know, I'm a competitive mom! I can't help thinking that Marcus deserves to be in the White team if those kids can.
By the way, sometimes I wish I had Marcus start playing soccer and violin earlier. Those kids out there have been playing since they were three and there are 4 years gap he needs to catch up. However, Marcus started when he wanted to, and he's doing pretty good for only playing for two years. Still, I feel like I need to push him harder to be able to compete with those experienced kids who are certainly getting even better every day. Do you think I need to relax a little bit? Am I being a too much of the tiger mom? I certainly don't want him to burn out, so I'm trying hard not to show my anxiety.
Anyway, on the registration information, there was a chart of the fees for this year and also for the future if he continues to play competitive soccer. It was scary how much it would cost if he gets better. Of course, it's always about "money", isn't it? Well, fortunately, they offer scholarships, and I applied for it. I hope we'll be able to receive it. My husband says that we need to sell his violin if we don't. Haha!
