New Soccer Club

Marcus transferred to a different soccer club recently.

We found a club that we thought was very well-coached, and we contacted them a few months ago to see if he could join their winter practice, with the intent of trying out for the club in a few months after the spring season was over. They allowed Marcus to come to the practice, and from the first practice, it was obvious that this was the team Marcus should be with. The coaching staff was great, and Marcus loved being there. Unbeknownst to us, they had an opening on their team, and they soon invited Marcus to take that spot.  There was no reason to reject their offer.

Except one: the cost.

With his previous club, Marcus had received a scholarship, so in order for him to be transferred to a different club, we would need to pay it back. They don't even prorate the fees, so we would have to essentially pay the annual club fee this year for two teams.

It was a tough decision since it would cost us all together over $800.  I was hesitant, but what choice do you have when you find a club that will likely help your child develop his skill to its full potential, and possibly put him in the top team in this area for years to come?  Marcus (and my husband!) really wanted to do it, and my husband pointed out several reasons why Marcus might lose the opportunity if we didn't do it now, so we felt we simply had to.

I know it's going to be more practice, and we will be traveling for tournaments in the future. Soccer is going to be even more of a major presence in our lives. 

He still plays the violin. I was going to have him quit violin because of this change, but he says he doesn't want to quit. I asked his violin teacher what she would think if he takes a few months break from the violin. She was not  crazy about my idea and strongly encouraged him to continue. He is in the Gifted Music School Preparatory Division, and they even offered a (very) small scholarship for him to stay. They were so delighted when I told them that Marcus would continue.

So, until the end of May at least, he will continue to do both. I want him to do what he likes to do, but he says he likes both!
